Have installed Network cards in two PC´s, which are using Win98SE. I am now experiencing shutdown problems. If the network cards are removed it cures the problem. On a second partition of my HDD I have installed WinXP which has no problems with or without the networks cards. Do I have to live with the fact that Microsoft cannot offer a resolution to this problem? Please note I have attended the MS Troubleshooting Course many times, have installed the so called fixes / patches, with no Success. I would installed WinXP in the other PC, but Microsoft isn´t giving away it´s software.

Hi.

First of all, when you say you have downloaded all of the fixes/patches, do you mean just those on the Microsoft update site?

When you have the network cards installed, have you set up mapped drive letters for accessing files on the other machine(s)? If so, try unmapping them, rebooting and then seeing if that fixes the problem. Shutdown in Windows98 gets more troublesome as you add mapped drive letters.

If it's not that, surprisingly, it can be a combination of the network card drivers and your video card drivers (had that problem myself a few times). Try downloading the latest versions from the manufacturer's sites. (Not a bad idea, anyway).

Let me know if any of this helps (or if not!). There are other possibilities, but let's eliminate the easiest to fix and the most likely culprits first.

I'd need a bit more precise information than you have supplied (like WHAT network cards? WHAT fixes & patches and in WHAT order, etc?).

Good luck.

Have visited Microsoft´s Win98SE Shutdown Support which advises that VGA graphics, hardware problems, driver non compatibilities may be the cause of the problem checks are advised. Have gone through most of the "Microsoft support" checks prior to installing the Shutdown Fix known in Germany as 4756de8.exe.
Elitegroup K7S5A Motherboard Bios Update K7SS5A021001.exe was installed along with newest Onboard SIS7012 soundcard driver. Visited Realtek Homepage to download newest driver for RTL 8139B Networkcard, along with downloading the newest SIS900 Onboard Network Card Driver for the sister computer which also has the shutdown problem. The sister computer has the same Motherboard. Have visited NVIDIA for newest video drivers, but after all I am still having to "switch" off the computer. Have not yet mapped any drive letters so can´t unmap them.
It is unusual that when I boot into my second partition which has WinXP installed there are NO shutdown problems at all, but the PC with Win98 is still having the shutdown problem.

Hi again.

I think your motherboards might (just might) be the common link.

I had similar problems with some motherboards a few months back. It turned out to be the VIA dirvers (the 4 in 1 driver set), which I think your Motherbaords may use or else may need.

I had to install those, then reinstall most of the other driver updates again. But it fixed the problem on a 3 machines.

It was a bit difficult figuring out exactly which VIA drivers I needed, but it seemed worth the time spent working it out.

Hi again!

I had a check through my notes over the past couple of years, and found some things you should try. I'm not sure what is on the Microsoft site (I don't really trust the technical expertise of an organisation that STILL can't fix the error in Word that prevents the Page Borders from printing properly on Deskjet printers! It's still not fixed in the New MS Ofice 11 beta!!!!!).

First of all, have you tried running MSConfig and setting the "Disable Fast Shutdown" option? That often makes PC shut down better if it is switched off.

Also, have you tried the web site at ? That has a lot of useful stuff.

My motherboard has a SIS Chip and have already tried my luck with the "disable fast shutdown" which only allows for Win98 to close down, but there appears that it only closes Win98 but it leaves the computer running. Have contacted Elitegroup which has informed me that the motherboard does NOT support Netgear, and it is not compatible to the Realtek network adapter ( NON APCI Standard ) It was suggested that I purchase a 3com adapter. Will have to think it over if I want to invest or remove the adater which is installed.

Thanks

Hi,
Here is a copy of a post from 2001. The supplement microsoft publishes dosn't alway work. If you have mapped drives on your machine , the problem is they are not being released from the otherside fast enough. try this it is still working for me.

I have 450 users and had a lot of problems with the win98se hanging on shut down with mapped drives. Here is the solution:

you need to create your own shut down batch routine. the reason you are getting a hang is that there are "hooks" that were not released from the other end of the mapping.

in your batch you must include the following

net use * /delete /yes

the net use command is used for mapping
the * is used to tell the machine "all" drives
the "/delete" is a switch telling the machine to delete
the "/yes" is a switch that answers the question that you will get if you don't use it.

the last line of your batch is the command line for shut down

C:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows

put it all together and you get

net use * /delete /yes
C:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows

save this as a batch and put a shortcut on your desktop. Simply click on it and in 15 - 20 seconds your machine will shutdown every time.
