I have to change the UPS batteries and I am concerned that the BCM 400, which is about 10 years old will not come up or will default.

Is there an internal battery on the BCM CPU also that might need to be changed and how best to power dow and up again?

If it's an APC ups, you can replace the battery without turning off the ups.
For the bcm itself if it's a version 4.0 go in Administration-utilities-reset-shutdown.
There's no need to replace the Bios battery.

After I am finished replacing the UPS batteries, how should I power up and restart the BCM?

plug it in. wait 5 minutes, make a phone call, check voicemail. make sure you can log into admin.

On a 400, it might take a while longer than 5 minutes. I usually see core telephony come back up within 5 minutes, but callpilot can take 15-20 minutes, or even more.

I have only worked on a few BCM I am a MICS man and I am always concerned about powering down a 10 year old system that uses a hard drive.

I have heard hard drive problems with the BCM. I am trying to troubleshoot the 8 port GASM that I can only get battery on and change the UPS batteries at the same time. All of a sudden this has started to happen on teh GASM on all 8 ports. It was suggested that I power donw take out the GASM and reseat it.

What is strange is that if I get battery why won't I get dial tone when I go off hook with my test set?
