Hi folks we have a member of staff going off on maternity leave and they have asked me if i can just 'shut off' their email while she's away so she doesnt get bombarded when she comes back in, is there a simple solution to just turn it on and off?

running sever 2000 with outlook 2000 :D

cheers folks!

When you disable the user account in AD, all mail bound for that account will be rejected.

Depending on her role within the company, my suggestion would be to forward her mail to someone else while she is away. Any important messages won't be missed.

to do this you can create a forward on the exchange under 'Exchange mail\delivery options'.

thank you people! thats was a very simple solution, it is not neccesary that it is forwarded so i will simply disable it

I really don't think disabling her will work. I have many disabled accounts that are setup to receive email. My suggest is to change her mailbox limits. Set "Prohibit Send/Receive" to a very small value.

I think disable will just prevent login to the account but emails will still come in. You would have to remove the smtp address to prevent emails from coming in.

Removing the SMTP address will only disable email coming in from the internet, not the internal email.

I've been doing this for a long time. The mail will be rejected both internally and externally.
There are several snags, though...
1) If she's on any Distribution Lists, the senders will get NDR's for mail sent to her mailbox (this may be annoying)
2) Brick level backups on that user's mailbox will fail and may cause your backup utility to report failure. If you're only doing DB level backups you will have no problem.
3) If the user is part of any Internet Distribution lists, she may be removed from them because NDR's will be sent back to the senders (Unless you have NDR's to the internet disabled)
