Hi,

My Windows 2k Pro won't shut down. For some reason it hangs up at the end, on a blank desktop screen and then shuts down and restarts straight away.

Anybody know of a solution?

Thanks

Shaun

A few suggestions
What was the last thing you installed on this system?
Some AV software scan the HDD on shut down, Try disabling any AV software on this system and try shutting down.
Apply latest service pack.
Run manufacturers diags on the machine to eliminate a hardware problem although I think this unlikely.

Shaun: I have had the problem before, with little or no success at discovering the problem in my system. However, I did find a freeware utility "ShutDownPro" that usually overcomes the problem.

Here is a link in Download.com to download ant try it for yourself:

Hope that helps, if so I'd appreciate a "helpful" mark.

Terry

Do you have this problem if you shutdown using Ctrl+Alt+Delete?

Thanks for the replies...

Ger2111,

The last thing that i installed were waves audio plugins for Logic Platinum (music sequencer).

What do you mean by disabling any AV software? do you mean to uninstall? and i'm not sure wahat AV means?

and lastly, yes i have the latest service pack.

Terry,

I tried the shutdown pro software but it didnt fix it. Thanks for that though.

BFOJ,

Ctrl+alt+delete doesnt seem to make any difference either.

Thanks again, any more ideas?

Shaun

After it restarts, press F8, and at the menu select Safe mode and then see if when you shutdown if that makes a difference. You might also try the step-by-step confirmation, see if there are any problems during the bootup that may not be noticeable during a regular startup.
