Is there a 100% solution for Windows 98 SE shutting down problem? When I try to shut down my PC message appears as "Windows is shuting down" but it does not shut down. I have to turn off the power or to restart the PC

If only such a thing existed!!

You need to look at the programs that are being loaded up at the start (use msconfig) and what are running when you shut down (use ctrl+alt+del). It is a case of trial and error to find out which program is causing it to hang. The most common culprit is AV programs.

Once you have found which program is causing the problem then it is often resolved by uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling.

There are a couple of previous threads here, and a FAQ. You could also do a google search and find the thousands of possible solutions, all of which swear to have the answer.
Probably the best site I've seen showed with google as ahuma.com or something similar.
And it isn't the gods aginst you when after several weeks of trouble free shutdowns the failure reappears.

This is the Win98Se problem, in the microsoft website they also state the problems.

There are 2 downloads (patches)
1. Shutdown supplement, file name (4756us8.exe)
2. Map drive shut down Updates Q260067

You can always update your OS in the website. Maybe you can try my solution, refresh your memory before shutting down your PC. I use it for my Win98Se, now it works very well.

1. Click Start> ShutDown (don't click any button, you can see the hard disk is running)
2. Click Cancel After you see the hard disk stop running.
3. Then only you shut down your pc.

If ur system is on LAN and having mapped drives, the best solution is to create a script. Copy this script on desktop and run this before giveing shutdown command.

@echo off
net use * /delete
:end

It worked for me.

You will also have to check your BIOS power managemnt settings to allow the os to shutdown machince. If your BIOS is obviously able to do so.

I've re-installed the shut-down fix from Microsoft many times on my 98 machines. It holds for a time and then the shut down problem returns. I finally established a shut-down procedure for my 98 users that offers a work-around solution.

When they shut-down instead of choosing 'Shut down' they now choose "Restart in Dos mode". When the DOS screen C:>windows appears they manually shut the power off.

The next time the computer powers up, it opens into Windows as normal--without scandisk, as Windows was exited properly at shut-down.

It's a bit annoying to actually have to push the power button but at least I don't worry about damage to the hard drives.

As I said it's a workaround not a fix....

As another message mentioned, the Windows Support Center (it's spelled: ) has a lot of info and links re. the Win shutdown problem - which has never completely been fixed thru XP. The solution could be as simple as a corrupt .WAV file (the Windows Exit sound). I have had good luck uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of fancy mouse drivers. My current install of Win98SE has not exhibited the problem yet - knock on wood!

There are several patches for 98 but it depends upon how your machine is configured. The most common reason for not shutting down is linked with mapped drives on a network although it could be that a particular program is not closing properly prior to shutdown.

On our machines, I have set up a shortcut on the desktop which runs this command:

rundll user.exe,exitwindows

The users double click on this to shut down their machines - it seems to work quite well.

On certain types of motherboards this situation pops up and no matter what you do it comes back. Its the type of chips that are used on these boards.
One thing that I have done is run scandisk every 2-5 days and by doing this the PC shuts down fine. This tells me that some files are not being released or are being corrupted after using them and after running scandisk it straightens them out

i go for what miserablgit suggest. i have the same shortcut in my quick launch bar of the task bar so it can be clicked only once. here is the complete command syntax...

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

I am having the same shut down problem and want to place the "rundll" shortcut on the desktop for the newbie who will be using this system - but I must confess I am not sure how to do that. Help?
Thanks,
SJ

right click on the an empty spot on the desktop. Create new. shortcut.
And you don't need to use the .exe. that is a default so it can be left out.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

I use "miserablgit" solution:

RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

and it works 100%. I had installed all the shutdown patch/fixes with so-so results until I set up the short cut to execute the above.

I have 3-W98SE (one as server) and 1-W95 on LAN and only have trouble with one machine (my workstation!), but it does have the most maps and printers shared to other 3 machines.

Some 98' machines seem to have the problem and other's never exhibit any symptoms!
