I am using CR10. I am getting multiple values of a company code in detail section. I am only showing one field, the company name. I must use the detail section as I need to use format with multiple columns and this only works on detail rather than groups. I have also set to select distinct records. What can I do just to show one instance of the record

Its best not to double post.

Create a running total that counts the details of each group and resets on change of that group. Then suppress any detail with a running total value that is greater than 1.

You will need to take care if you are using summaries as you are only suppressing data, records are there in back ground so counts and sums will be infalted. YOu will need o use more running totals with above condition.

You can use multiple column formatting on groups. Set it for the detail section (even though you will suppress this) and then in the layout section check "format groups with multiple columns".

You might want to try this:

Highlight your field in the details section, and right click to get the properties box. Choose format field. Under the Common tab check mark the Suppress if duplicate box. Then preview your report. That might work as well. Good Luck!
