after 4 months of searching I finally found a job. but the money is very low. working for a big retail store as a computer technician. I am more into networking stuff and working for big corps but it's next to impossible to find an IT job these days so I am thinking I should take this job. but $10 per hour seems rather low dont you think? I was making 15 per hour at my last job working as a network support specialist.

any suggestions??

thank you

With a general slow down amongst me and my friends, I saw up to a factor of two drop in pay. No one is really happy about it, and no one is going to be the least bit loyal when things pick up, but each made his choice.

Just don't skimp on doing the job. Have a bad rep is worse than having a long hole in employment. And in a couple of cases, my friends have been able to trade lack of pay for more flexibility and less bullshit.

I agree a bit. Take the job! Its a JOB!!! Then when something better comes along take it. Dont let the gaps in employment get too big. It looks bed on you. Its better to hold a lesser (but related) job for a short period than to have an employer ask "What have you been doing for the last five months?" With that question you are put into a position where almost any answer you give can look bad. With this job you can also get more experience. James Collins

I agree, low pay is better than no pay, right? If you decide to take the job, show them what you're made of, do a really great job and you might see a raise or additional benefits coming your way, if not, you will at least have shining references to place on your resume for when the market picks up and you won't be considered "rusty" from a large gap in your employment history. Also, lower paying jobs sometimes do have more flexible hours and can be easier on your schedule in general... is it very likely that you will get a call at 3AM asking you to come in and fix a problem? Think if all the sleep!;-) BeckahC

I agree its always best to fill those gaps.. I was laid off in Sep and took 6 months to land even full time anything its rough out there right now take it it sometimes leads to other opportunities... Network your self in any position.

Just have faith....I was laid off in November, and I just found work in July....

It's scary, but it all works out for the best. I danced around with one offer early in my unemployment but pulled away before we got too far because of A) the low pay B) the lack of further training.

It's a decision I questioned many times while I was un-employeed but in the long run it worked out for the best.

Have faith.

I too concur - take the job for several reasons. To add the list already stated, all of which I agree with, but its real world experience - you might be able to cite some nice things that you did in that job.

Plus its potential character references, professional references, a chance to make new contacts - reputation building etc etc,

and perhaps most importantly,

It is much easier to get a job when you already have a job. And you're in a better negotiating position when haggling over terms, since you're not as desparate. Good Luck

YES, Take the job. Settling down into that position would make yourself more marketable, and thats what companies want to see.

Ask yourself this...

What's better; $0 not working, $8 flipping burgers, or $10 working in the industry you love?

Now ask yourself this question...

What looks better on my resume; flipping burgers, or doing PC tech work for a department store?

Just because you accept this job doesn't mean you have to stop looking for work. If you find something tomorrow that pushes $20/hour you walk into your bosses office and say, "I found something better, later."

In this world there is one thing that will get you ahead in every aspect, and that's confidence! Want chicks to dig you, show confidence. Want a raise, walk into your boss’s office and show confidence. Need a new job, walk into that interview and show confidence. Want to make more then $10/hour in a slow market, show confidence! If you show confidence, whether you have the skills or not, you will get what you want.

Good luck
