Hi,

I have a task that I want to have a fixed duration of say two weeks, May 1st to May 15th. I also have 3 resources that will work on this task for roughly 2 hours each (don't care when) over the two week task duration. So I would like to show the task as two weeks long and the two hour work or effort by the resources.

I've tried several different methods of entering this in Project 2007 but never seem to be able to have it displayed correctly, I get either a task duration of two weeks for all resources or six hours.

I've done some searching on this and seem to have hit a wall, any ideas?

Thanks.

So it seems I need to be using a fixed duration task and manually entering the hours I think the task should take the resource and the units will be calcualted automatically.

This seems to work when setting up the task but if I go back to a task and change the hours of work the Units never changes but the duration does.

I've tried several combinations of setting this up and never seem to get exaclty what I need, any thoughts?

If you have a Fixed Duration task then the Duration will not change.

Even if you are adding new resources or deleting existing resources with Effort Driven set, the Duration will not change.

Even if you are adding new resources or deleting existing resources with Effort Driven NOT set, the Duration will not change.

Even if you are amending the amount of Work assigned to a resource, the Duration will not change.

If the task is fixed duration then the duration is fixed.

If you think you have a set of circumstances that defies the logic then describe them carefully and I'll try to replicate your problem.

Hmm, that's what I thought as well but here's what I'm seeing.

Create a new task that is Fixed Duration, effort driven.
Set a start date of 1/30/09 with a duration of 16 days.
Assign 1 resource.
Set the work to 2 hours, which automatically appears as 2% units for the resource.
No deadline.
Start ASAP, no constraint date.

If I change the work to 3 hours the duration changes to 24 days and the units % never changes.

Nope.

P2003 works fine in your scenario. I end up with a start/finish of Jun1/Jun22, duration 16d; Resource R1 @0.02 units; work 3h.

P2007 behaves the same way.

Perhaps your resource calendar, or task calendar, or your project calendar has some constraints on those dates.
