Hello. I just bought 2 160G WD hdd's on sale. I'm going to replace my current 120G with them, and I bought 2 in hopes of trying out raid 0. I want as much performance as possible

I'm just trying to find out more info on how secure this array actually is though. In other words, I don't wnat to set this up to only have a bad sector on one drive crop up in a month and the whole array becomes unuseable due to this. I have been reading as much as I can about raid 0, but no one really addresses the issue of how stable it is. I know that if one drive fails, the whole array does, but how is the array effected by bbad sectors? What else can happen? How stable is a raid 0 array? Should I bother, or should I just use both drives as a regular IDE master/slave and not worry about raid?

I was surprised to see how little most people actually know about raid, and how uncommon it actually is. From what I read on it, it seems like the next best thing, but there must be something that is preventing people from using it, and this is what I'm looking for.

Please help, thanks a lot :)

Power outages/bronouts/spikes can cause havoc with electronic equipment of any sort. I have UPSs on all my computers. I feel it is better safe than sorry. You might never need it, but the one time you do.....

Happy New Year everyone;

Hey, one more question. I forgot about some encrypted thing sI had on the original drive, and some things in "my documents" folder. I tried slaving this drive to my server to get the stuff off, but as I suspected it is saying access denied. Is there anyway to copy this info off this comp, or is the only way to disconnect the raid setup and master this drive again to remove it? Can I do this, will it effect the array that I have set up now if I remove the IDE controller, and just leave these 2 drives disconnected to do this, then reattach them? LEt me know. I don't want to have to redo this raid array again, but I need this data. Thanks.

Can you Decrypt the data first?
I found this info;
HOW TO: Identify Encrypted Files in Windows XP
Encrypted File System (using NTFS in Windows XP)

Encryption - Show Encryption Commands on the Shortcut Menu

You may find it easier to enable EFS by placing "Encrypt" and "Decrypt" commands on the Microsoft Windows Explorer context menu when a file is right-clicked with the mouse. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and find the key below.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]

Value Name: EncryptionContextMenu
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = default, 1 = enabled)

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'EncryptionContextMenu' and edit the value according to the settings above. Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Encryption - Manage the Encrypting File System

When you use Encrypting File System (EFS), you can store data securely because selected NTFS file system files and folders can be encrypted. This setting allows you to enable or disable EFS. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EFS]

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called "EfsConfiguration" and set it according to the value data above. Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect

I did not find that key...

HAve you heard of he cipher app in xp? Someone told me to try that, will that work? I couldn't figure out the right combinations of switches to decrypt the files... let me know what you think...

I really don't want to screw up your rig with bad advice.....I have little to none experience with XP, especially with encrypted file systems.(more of a 98 Man, Myself),

You may only need to give "permission" to your new RAID XP install by installing a "certificate" or something...I don't know personally.
(I was trying to just offer some suggestions)

possible help;

Wish I could be of more help, and hopefully those in the know, about Encryption, will drop by...
