I was wanting to upgrade my 64mb SDRAM with an additional 128mb stick.

I had purchased a pc133 128mb (166?pin) stick about a week ago and tried to put it into my computer but it was about 1cm too long(1cm longer than the stick that was already installed on my system). I asked a couple people at circuit city(where I bought it) and they couldn't tell me why -- didn't sound like they really knew what they were talking about. Anyway, I tried to call the manufacturer of my computer (compaq), and they told me my warentee is expired so they can't help me, so I'm hoping to maybe get a response from someone here that knows a good thing about memory.

Here are some specs on my computer:
500mhz AMD K6
64mb RAM - I have two additional open memory slots, which have two white clips that secure the memory in the slot.

If anybody could give me some info on this it'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

All I can think of is maybe that system running 72pin EDO memory?

Exx,

You need SIMMs not DIMMs for systems that old. ----------------------------------------
Is George Lucas Kidding...

So, what these people are trying to say, is that you probably bought the wrong type of RAM. By your description, either the people at Circuit City screwed up by giving you a DDR stick, or they gave you a PC133. Either way they screwed up by not asking what you needed in a proper way, and also didn't try to confirm it if they did.

Bring the memory back to the store, and start screaming until they give you a refund - then issue a large complaint with the manager about how their techs aren't certified.

I bought my system a little over a year ago.

I think Faust is a bit off the mark here, your system would use 168 pin sdram sticks, the two white clips you mention confirm this. You can use either PC100 or PC133, if your board does not support PC133 it will just run at 100. Go with what jschrie says, its good advice, sounds like they have given you DDR RAM or something.

NOW SORRY GUYS BUT I THINK YOU ARE ALL WRONG!!
Surely ALL AMD K62 boards use SDram!!!!!??
Anyway what I think Exx is doing is measuring the strip of ram against the slot without opening the white clips!!
As we know the ends of the ram fit into the slots in the plastic clips. Hope this is the case??
another thing is although PC133 is backwards compatible (it will run at 100htz instead of 133) some boards that were designed for 100htz ram don't like 133, you will just have to suck it and see!! Anyway TRY IT AGAIN. Martin

I have a AMD k6-2 board that uses DIMMS.
My board has slots for SIMMS and DIMMS. This may be the case with your board. If so you will not be able to use the old RAM with the new RAM also you may need to set a jumper on the motherboard for it to recognize this RAM. Do you have the manual for the Mboard. If not do you know the model?

sounds like you purchased the right memory
but I cant see why the difference in size
compaq used to used odd memory sticks so you had to buy there own brand i.e. slightly different wiring and moving the slots over so it wouldnt fit in standard slots . could
this be it or may be a very poorly manufactured chip!!!
as for compaq support ! Sad so Sad
