When I installed Vista on my new laptop from Dell yesterday, I had a shortcut bar on my desktop at the top of the screen. It had email, music, pictures, IE, etc. Somehow it has disappeared, and for the life of me, I can't get it back! Where is the setting for this? Thanks!

I installed Vista on my new laptop from Dell yesterday"

What was on the Dell previously? Has this Toolbar disappeared from Vista or something pre-Vista? Or did you have it in your new Vista and it has disappeared from that?

Try right-clicking on a blank area of the Taskbar and select Toolbars and see what is checked and unchecked for things like Quick Launch or other interesting items.

You always have System Restore to play with too.

Thank you for your response. It came preinstalled on my Dell. I have looked at the toolbar option and have found nothing. I also looked in the control panel, properties of the desktop..

Try System Restore.

Have a look in MsConfig via Start Run to see if some third party program responsible for any Toolbar has been unchecked.

Have you uninstalled any of the software (or other rubbish) Dell likes to share with you?

What do you see if you enable Quick Launch, just out of interest, does it included your shortcuts, even if it is positioned near the Start Button?

Pop into Safe Mode and see if you have your missing Toolbar via that.

Try logging on as another user in Normal Mode (create it if necessary) and see if you have it there.

This sounds like some Dell supplied software, not something that's part of Vista. Have a look at the drivers & download section of the dell support site (enter your asset tag number) to see if maybe there's a vista compatible update. Of course, you'll need to figure out what that dell software might be called.

Thanks all. I was hoping that it wasn't Dell installed software. I normally go through and delete all of the extra 'crap' that comes installed on their machines. Guess I will just do without!

Well, chances are if it was there before the upgrade (this was an upgrade, right?), then it is probably still there and just not functioning properly. So at the very least, you probably want to figure out what it was so it doesn't cause problems at some point in the future.

It came preinstalled on my new laptop. I did uninstall some unneeded programs. I am sure it was included in one of those. Thanks!

I have the same bar. It can be located @ "C:\Program Files\Dell\DellDock\DellDock.exe" -OR- click "Start >> All Programs >> Startup >> Dell Dock".
