Shinning text/image effect troubles

Hello all...i am new here and want to thank all that participate.

I just watched steves tutes on Flash Pro8 and learned how to do a shinning text.

I can repeat the steps with success every time.

I am trying to apply the Gradient/shinning text effect to an image that i have imported to the stage.

It doesn't work. I am thinking maybe i need to convert the imported image to a symbol? Maybe as a Graphic symbol first?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Its like the image is there at all.

I can tell something is wrong after i apply the mask, because the image is hidden behind the mask after i apply.

Where in that tute, did it say you could apply this mask effect on a picture?
