hi all,

we have a situation where multiple users will obtain a "Sharing violation" error from Excel/Word for files stored on our windows 2003 file server. Each time they report this error, you will find that they have multiple sessions open on the file server (Computer Management>Shared Folders>Sessions) and that one of those open sessions will have a long "Idle Time". They will not be able to save that file under the same name but normally can after I close the idle session. Has anyone experienced this issue?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I was actually thinking about disabling the autodisconnect function on the file server. But I have a question:

Firstly, from the KB that you provided, I understand that it is recommended to turn off autodisconnect via regedit compared to command line due to some auto-tuning features. Can you please clarify that setting the autodisconnect to "ffffffff" is the same as setting it to "-1" in command prompt?

Secondly, do I still need to configure KeepConn since it mentions that the less set duration value will be the one that is applied.

Lastly, the two possible fixes above are server-side fixes. Is there anything that needs to be done on the client side?

I read that there is a "KeepAliveTime" and "KeepAliveInterval" that can be set as well.
Would you recommend applying this as well? I just want to be sure instead of applying too many things all at once.

Thanks in advance.

no, its not. -1 disables autodisconnect, whereas fffffff sets the max. value

"Lastly, the two possible fixes above are server-side fixes. Is there anything that needs to be done on the client side?"

no, the entry must be located on the computer that has the share or shares

"Would you recommend applying this as well?"

do you run windows desktop search?
if so, uninstall it on one problem client and see if it resolves the problem
no

Hi M. Knorr,

I have applied the fix last night and let's see how we go.

Set autodisconnect to ffffffff on the file server

and

added KeepConn DWORD on the clients and set it to 65535

and

Unchecked "Allow this computer to turn of this device to save power" for the PCs in question.

Hi guys, seems to be working OK so far but it did happen once for one of my users.
Can someone clarify this...
On our file server, when I open Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Sessions
The user I mentioned above always seems to have 2 sessions from the same hostname. One would say 5-6 files open while the other would always show 0 files open. The strange thing is that the idle time for the session with 0 files open is often close to 0 meaning that it is "refreshing" and is doing something. My question... why does only this user have multiple sessions from the same hostname while other users don't. Is this normal or abnormal? Hope someone can clarify. Thanks!
