I need one computer to be able to access the Program Files folder on another XPpro machine. I have the hard drive shared as full rights, I have the guest account enabled, both computers log on with the same name and password, and still no go. The Windows help files aren't helping. I go to sharing & security and it is greyed out.

Share only the Program Files directory. You need to specify the user (machinename\Username or just machinename$) and give them the correct permissions in the share settings, but you also need to go into the general folder settings and give that user permissions to access the folder. As the share gives a permission to view a link to a folder and carry out actions with remote privileges, but if the local folder hasn't been given the permissions for said user or computer to carry out tasks\access it, it will fail.

Did that make sense? I do waffle.

Hope this Helps.

I want the whole hard drive shared along with program files folder. Remote users do not have access to it. When I try to share it, the area under sharing to check is greyed out, and not possible. Is there a setting somewhere else to enable sharing on this folder and\or the windows folder? This is not a client\server environment, simple file sharing only.

Situation:
I have loaded a credit card software on an office computer. The software will only install to Program Files, there is no custom setup to install elsewhere, so I am stuck with it being there, and the cash registers can not map to it because I can't figure out how to allow them access to the Progam Files folder.

But why do you need access to the whole C:\ drive? You can just share the program files directory.
If you have no option for Sharing, then you haven't got File and Print sharing switched on.

Im guessing its Windows XP;
Start
Control Panel
Network Connections
Local Area Connection > Right Click
Properties
General tab
This connection uses the following items
File and Print Sharing For Microsoft Networks > Make Sure it is checked.

If that option isn't even there, click install
select Service
select File and Print Sharing, and install it. You will need your MS Windodws disk.

Hope this Helps.

There is another point of sale software running that needs access to the hard drive, it has to be shared. File and print sharing is on, I can share the drive, I can even share other folders with the exception of Program Files and Windows. I don't care about the Windows folder, but I am betting this is related. All the users are members of Administrators.

this situation has happened to me. file and printer sharing was checked for the whole drive. all folders would share, except program files folder. it would come up grayed out. i don't know what it is. but i bet you it has something with microsoft's copy right crap. this way, you can get 1 copy of any program and 500 machines could share it, which violates one-copy/one-machine golden rule.

No, you should be able to share the program files directory. Try this....running out of ideas.

Program Files > right click > properties > Security > Add > EVERYONE > OK > give FULL ACCESS > Reboot.

See if you can share it.

Hope this Helps.

If that doesn't do it, disable the windows firewall, then try.

I know these solutions are not secure, but if we can issolate the problem you are having, then we can fingure out a way around it.

Hope this Helps.

cotton, i haven't tried the add thing. i'm gonna try that. but the whole thing for the program file is grayed out.

Would it be possible to transfer what you need to share under Program Files to another part of the hard drive? Most times you have the option when installing to change the default to another location. Just a thought...

assuming it's Windows Xp Pro and the 'puters are in a workgroup, not a domain, here's what the MS help file sez (note the last sentence...real 'helpful', eh?):

To open Windows Explorer, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
To change the name of your folder on the network, type a new name for your folder in the Share name text box. This will not change the name of the folder on your computer.
To allow other users to change the files in your shared folder, select the Allow other users to change my files check box.
If you are logged on as a Guest, you cannot create a shared folder.
The Sharing option is not available for the Documents and Settings, Program Files, and WINDOWS system folders. In addition, you cannot share folders in other user's profiles.

Welcome Dreuxzer...

I remember reading that in the Microsoft knowledge base articles. Guess I didn't read far enough along. I kind-of figured that. Thanks
