I do not understand the diference in permissions set under the share tab and the security tab in a folders properties window.

I am looking for a compare and contrast explaination if possible.

Thanx in advance.

I am not sure that my question was answered there.

If I am understanding this now....... the permissions set under the share tab controll ONLY acces from across the network and not files accessed by a user logged on to the local machine.

the security tab then contralls only the local user and has no bearing on the folder when accessed across the network.

Have I got this correct now??

Yes, you are right. One way to simplify it is. If you don't care if the users can see the share, simply set the permissions to everyone full control under the share permissions, then use the security tab to lock down the files.

If you do care if the users can see the share across the network, then you'll want to set the appropriate permissions under the share tab.

are you saying then that the permission set on the security tab overide those set on the share tab??

Basically the system looks at the share permission and at the file(NTFS) permission. Whichever is the most restrictive applies.
So you can give full control at the share but at the NTFS side restrict access (eg read only) and the person/group you specified in the permissions will only have read access.
