hello
i have a database that was just installed on my SBS 2k server. there are clients that need access to about 8 directories that were created off the root of the C: drive. (not sure why it was built this way!)
so in order to run the client app to view database files they need access to all those directories. i certainly don't want to give admin rights to the three people who need access.
the guy who set it up mapped a drive as L:\servername\c$
and all works well. but he did it logged in as me (admin). and of course no other user can map the c$ share.

any ideas how to circumvent this? i think i may try to reinstall the database on the d: drive.
thanks.

You cold grant those 3 users full permissions to the 8 folders. Far from a domain admin, but they'll be able to manipulate the folders any way they want to.

the problem with that is the application looks for the directories to be under the root of the share. so there's a folder called "outfiles" and one called "sc". most of the data is in "sc" but some is in "outfiles". so i'm not sure how the app would know where to find the "outfiles" directory.

so i shared out "sc" as the L: drive but at soon as it need to pull from the "outfiles" directory it craps out, because it's looking for it to be on the L: drive.

use Distributed File System (DFS) to generate a single sharepoint with all the folders inside.

I think I would get the guy who installed the software/db's back in and have him re-install (preferably NOT on the C: drive).

Create a folder and then install to that folder. You can then create a share from the one folder, with the appropriate permissions
