Sharing Files With Remote Connections

Hi Folks,

I have used Remote Desktop to connect to a home workstation. It worked fine. However, I need to be able to share files between the two computers.

I attempted to use the Management Console to add the Shared Folder snap in; which I have done successfully in the past on workstations within a domain.

However, it will not connect to the home computer. In the "Another Computer" field, it will not accept the IP address of the computer or the computer name. It said the network path was not found.

Remote Desktop was connected at the time. I verfied the IP address and made sure that the computer to which I am connecting has valid shared folders.

Has anyone had this dilemma? How can I fix this.

What version of the RDP client are you using? Normally if I need to share files I just tell the rdp client to extend my drives to the remote computer.

Start up mstsc, expand the options, go to local resources and tick the disk drives on the Local devices section.

That 'should' be all you need to do to share resources.

Thanks Simon,

That allowed me to copy files between the computers.

Now, while using Remote Desktop, can I create a drive map to the computer to which I am linking?

I am attempting to map to the c: drive of that computer by specifying the computer's IP address. It tells me it cannot access and the network path is not found.

I came across some info stating to make sure the "Remote Registry" setting is set to Automatic on the target computer (in Administrative Tools, Services). Mine is fine.

I would like to be able to access the folders on both computers from within Windows Explorer.

If you did what SimonDavies said you should be able to access the local computer's drives, the one you are physically seated in front of) as well as the remote computer's drives, the one your are "linking" to form Windows explorers.

The Drives from the local computer will appear as Networked drives if I'm not mistaken when you double click on My computer form inside the RDP session.

But only from inside the RDP session.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

What you have to consider is that the IP address of the machine inside the network is more than likely not going to be accessable from the internet due to firewalling issues. The same thing with trying to map a drive to the remote pc (that entails that you have ports open on your firewall, again a security No no in almost all companies).

Be happy with the solution you have for you, as has been mentioned you can have access to the data during the rdp session.

If you want to have access to data on the remote pc without an RDP session then you will need to create an FTP server and do it that way.
