I have a small home network where I currently have 2 pc's(both running xp) connected thru a hub. I'm running TCPIP as my protocol.(DHCP disabled) My question is this. I need to hook up a 3rd. pc that is running win95, so that I can copy some old files from the win95 pc and onto one of the xp machines. Do i need to do anything to the xp machine other than create a user and password that matches the one that I use to log my win95 pc with?

Thanks in advance for any help

Well, there is nothing to be done actually. U just have to configure the TCP/IP setting properly on Win95 since ur not using DHCP.

Just make sure your win95 machine is configured ok (win95 installs ipx & netbeui, NOT TCP/IP by default - so make sure you have installed TCP/IP. As well as IP address, you'll need to make sure its in same workgroup as XP, install file sharing and share the drive(s) and/or folder(s) you need to copy to XP. Apologies if this is all obvious to you - I know its not to many).

We have a similar situation with 3 Win95 PC's networked together and we've just added a new XP PC. The Win95 PC's can all see the XP PC, but not the other way around. The workgroup name is the same for all, since all four can be seen from Win95 PC's. Whenever we try to access the shared folder on a Win95 PC from XP, it's not accessible. TCP/IP is on all 4. What else is needed on the XP side for it to see the Win95 PC's?

SArmyTech,

Do you mean the XP machine can see the 95 machines (in My Network Places) and also the shares, but when you try to access a share you get inaccessible message (or, can it not see them at all)?

SArmyTech, are there passwords on the '95 shares? XP passes encrypted passwords through the network by default and 95 does not. I can't seem to find any references right now, but if this seems to be the case, post back and I will do some more digging.

To wolluf, XP can't see the 95 machines, but the 95 machines can see the XP machine. Not accessible error occurs when I try to map drives on XP using \\win95 pc name\shared folder\.

To smah, the only password I know of on the 95 shares is the initial logon. Where in 95 would I add other passwords?

What protocol are you using for network connectivity between your '95 machines?

Since that network is in another building in another city, I'm going from memory here. I know TCP/IP has been installed on all four. Looked for IPX/SPX NetBEUI, installed what I could. I could actually ping the Win95 PC's (we gave them all static IP's), but could not map a drive from XP to Win95.
