I wrote in last week about sharing printers and we fixed the problem by using the ethernet. We have files on 1 computer that we both need. I should be able to do this some way, if i can print from the other G-4. Please help. We have ethernet to each computer, from the office network.

U say you have an ethernet network now? What kind of server is the office using? You could create a shared volume on the server, this would be the best practice rather than keeping files locally on the 'client G4's' a back up of this area would be essential.

We have ethernet network, i guess. it's plugged in so we can get the internet. the rest of the office has a network, i guess, but they are all on windows, and do something with credit or billing software, i think. i was just hoping there was an easier way to get the files off one computer to another one, without having to put all on discs.

Ok...so you both have Mac towers...and an ethernet network...you have what you need to share files.

What OS are you running 9 or OSX?

If you are using 9, go to: control panels/sharing and swtich to 'active'. You should now be able to see the other mac via the Chooser.

If you are running X go to: system preferences/sharing. Under the 'services' tab, tick the 'Personal File Sharing' box. File sharing will now activate. Then go to the 'ethernet' control panel and make a note of the TCP/IP IP address.

Once you have done this...close the window, then click on the desktop and press 'Apple K', then type in the IP address of the machine you want to connect to and visa versa.

Once you have done this and the other users HD is mounted on your desktop, drag it into the dock to make an alias shortcut.

Let me know how it goes.

We used the drop box in my public folder after I turned on file sharing. My co-worker just put all the files that I needed (alot) into that and so far that worked. But we did that before I saw your new message. So I've not tried that yet.
