I’m having problems sharing a printer on a win2kpro computer.

I installed a printer on the win2kpro machine. This computer is a member of our NT domain. Printing works fine from that workstation or other members of the domain.

However we also have several computers who do not belong to the domain (win2k and winXPpro). When I try to connect with one of these computers I get a “could not connect” message.

I’ve enabled the guest account on the print server and ensured that it has access to the printer. I’m not sure what else to try. Please help.

Thanks in advance.

Are the users of the non-domain clients members of the domain. What I mean is, does User1 on the client, have an account on your domain.

If so, connect them to the printer using the
domain\user1 and password logon, even though the client is not a member.

Avoid the guest account. Hewissa

I have:

user1 on computerA (user1 is a member of the NT Domain, and sharing a printer)

user2 on computerB (user2 is not a member of the domain, and cannot connect to the shared printer) I get a "Cannot connect to the printer. Access is denied"

How can i connect them to the printer using domain\user1 password?

You can also explicitly set anonymous user access on the printer. This would allow anyone to use it. ________
Remember, you're unique... just like everyone else.

I wasn't suggesting giving user2 - user1's login information. I was asking if your situation invloved users not on the domain. You said that " we also have several computers who do not belong to the domain " but didn't specify if the users of those computers did.

You could use the anonymous account as jasen has suggested. I haven't so it would be interesting to hear if it works. Hewissa

I forgot, you may need to go into the local security policy and allow anonymous access from the network for that to work. Can't remember if that's disabled by default. ________

Where can I set explicitly set anonymous user access on the printer/network?

I would say printer. Right Click> Security> Type anon and check names and it does find an anonymous user account.

At the command prompt of the non-domain client type

net use LPT1: \\IP Address\MyPrinter1
OR
net use LPT1: \\W2KPRN1\MyPrinter1

How many outside users need to print to the printer on this client? If only a few,why not add those users to the local machine that shares the printer? Thus granting access only to the machine and the printer.

Edit the local machine policy to grant access from the network but deny access to logon on locally. Therefore allowing for network access to the printer but preventing outside users local access to the computer. Hewissa
