Caution: During Setup, in a default installation, Windows SharePoint Services extends the default virtual server (Default Web site in IIS) with Windows SharePoint Services. If you have a Web site running on the default Web site in IIS, that Web site will be taken over by Windows SharePoint Services during installation.

How can I prevent this? I want to use Sharepoint V2, but I do not want it to be the start page. I want to have a link to the sharepoint site from a custom home page.

Thanks
-Casey

Forgot to mention, this is for Sharepoint services... NOT PORTAL

I've had this same problem, only I cant remember the exact steps I took to fix it. It had something to do with making a new IIS location on Port 81 instead of the default port.

That did it!! Thanx ex0r!!

Just for info, I changed the Default Web Site to port81 then installed sharepoint and it errored out saying it couldnt extend the default website. So I went to the Administrator to extend the default website and place sharepoint in its on place. Once this was done I could access sharepoint like I wanted to and my default website remained and pointed to I changed the port back to 80 and everything is working like a charm.

Thanks!

additional info: this is by design

to overcome this problem:
always install wss using the farm setup. even if you are not going for a farm setup (just the mostly used single server setup).
This will install WSS and at the end you can extend the virtual server you want. (or go and create a new virutal server on IIS, get back to the admin page and extend that one)

The default setup automatically extends the default web site.

hope this info helps
