Hello All,
I am new to SharePoint and this Forum. I have a simple question.

My firm's new initiative requires a DMS w/workflow. We anticipate to initially scan and store about 20 MILLION documents and plan scalability of the solution to allow for 1-2 MILLION documents per year going forward. Documents will be mostly doc, xls, ppt, pdf, jped, vsd etc.

Now, I know that SharePoint 2007 DMS stores the documents in form of SQL Blobs. What issues will I face in this case if we decide to go ahead with SharePoint vs a classic DMS like Interwoven or OpenText or Documentum solution. I know the classic DMS and have worked with Interwoven for a while but have no clue as to what to expect from SharePoint.

Could you please share some light on limitations of SharePoint with respect to Storage and other areas.

Thank you,
CS.

limitations all depend on the number of servers and etc that you have i believe. Let me get you some links to information for you

Have you ever considered the tool FileDirector combine with the Microsoft sharepoint services 3.0 that is free.

You could do way more with more options. Share point as some considering limitations for document scanning, OCR and no options for Markups (i.e. adding annotations to documents).

looks at this product with sharepoint service 3.0 you can download sharepoint serice 3.0 for free and have all the options of creating web content, blogs, wiki, etc...

contact them fro a presentation or a free trial. It will worth the try.

good luck

Thank you for your respose. Unfotunately I work for a firm that has so much money they don't know what to do with it :) !!! I work on the business side and have no control over the solution selection (politics you see !!!) sorry .

So back to the basics

We have DECIDED to go for SharePoint 2007 as the platform.
As for the # of servers there is no limit if I can justify the purchase of new servers.

Is there a site that compares document management system leaders such as documentum, interwoven with SharePoint.

All I am looking for is Pro/Con of using SharePoint.

Please advise thank you.

Hi Capscorpio--

Good choice selecting Sharepoint as a DM solution. A lot of firms find it cost effective, as they are already working with Microsoft solutions.

There are a few things to think about, as an out-of-the-box DM solution, it isn't the most robust. However, there is an add-on, WISDOM DMF, that enables SharePoint to be one of the leading DM solutions. Ta look at this case study (for the record--it was done by Microsoft, as a third party) This outlines some of the limitations of SharePoint, and the ways in which they can be overcome.
