Has anyone faced this before

Windows NT4 workstations logging on to Nt4 servers PDCs and BDCs what seems to happen occasionaly is that the users profile becomes grayed out when you go to delete the cached profile and if you try to delete it manually from c:\winnt\profiles\ directory it tells you there is a sharing violation with NTUSER.dat

The only way you can fix this is by rebooting the pc then connecting to the admin$ from another PC and deleting the "problem profile" or by taking it off and on the Domain again.

It doesn't matter if these are .dat .man or pathed desktops through the policy.

Anyone any suggestions

Thanks in advance....

I notice someone else had a simillar problem

thread621-222392 I do know how to delete the cached profile the question still exist why is it happening and how can it be resolved.....

Njoy!

I know this is a relatively old thread, but as I am having major problems (which I think are related to ntuser.dat) I am resurrecting it.

Symptoms:

If I try to perform a system backup, or disc cleanup, or anti-virus check, the process almost completes and then my machine powers down completely and instantly, as if it suddenly lost mains power. It then takes 5-6 attempts before I can re-start the machine.

At first I thought the anti-vurus program was to blame, but when other progs did the same thing I did some research. My research points to the file ntuser.dat in one of the profiles on my machine.

I can't delete the file nor cut/paste it as it is in use. This profile appears never to actually log-off. I've tried UPHClean, but it doesn't appear to do anything, the file is always in use and inaccessible.

All I want to do is release or delete the damn thing and then never use that profile again.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Regards

So whatever user you log on as, this profile is always in use?

Then I'd slave the drive in another machine and delete it from there (via the other machines operating system - you'll probably need to take ownership)
