Hello Everyone... I have a problem.

I can't for the life of me get the Internet sharing to work. Here are my stats I have a server (Win 2K) IP 192.168.0.1, and a windows 98 PC (w/IE 5.5). I am running a dual network card in my server, one for my DSL and another for my Lan (Local). I have set up DHCP and DNS and I can join my domain fine. Everytime I try to connect i receive a page can'T be displayed or if I put the IP of my server in the proxy config I recieve page under construction. Am I missing anything?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

When you share your connection in 2000 it uses DHCP to do it. If you config for static IP's then it wont work. Set both of your nic's up for DHCP the one being your DSL and the other for your LAN.
This also means that you have to enable DHCP on your 2000 server.

Hope this helps you

Don't put DHCP on the server, just install ICS. This uses DHCP and will assign addresses using NAT.

Actually, don't put ICS on a server with active directory, PERIOD. It uses it's own DNS and DHCP and will hork up your network until it's gone. Use NAT, period.

Check your nearest Microsoft KB for details.

I set this up a home if a few minutes ( I couldn't believe how easy it was). Here's what I did..

Machine 1:
Windows 2000 Professional (or server ...doesn't matter)
2 NICs- One for Cable modem and one for internal network hub.

Load ICS

NIC 1 uses DHCP from cable company.
NIC 2 is set to DHCP but I don't even have a DHCP server on my internal network. When DHCP request fails, it uses the automatice IP address (169.254.0.1)

See this if you don't know what APIPA is:
Machine 2 and 3:
Windows 2000 professional
these only have one nic: Set to DHCP eventhough I don'thave a DHCP server...these also get APAPI addresses.

All three machines are connected to HUB.

Hope this helps..

I am attempting to do the same thing....share my cable modem with win2k adv server and some WinME pc's. I have the 2 NICs in my server. My Cable does not offer DHCP so I set it up as static. No problem there because I can surf the net with my server. When I setup the second nic as DHCP along with any of the winME pc's...no connection. Cant even ping between them.

Can I set them as static IP's?

The second nic in my server is set up as
IP:192.168.0.1
NET:255.255.255.0
DefaultGateway: my cable modems gateway
DNS server: my cable modems DNS

Is this the problem?

Actually, I see a few possibilities.

Check your DHCP Scope Options for the following:

1. DNS Server : Should point to your SERVER's IP
2. Gateway: Should be your internal IP on your SERVER

Also,

1. You need to enable forwarding on your server by removing the '.' forward lookup zone in DNS, then refresh, then go to properties of the server, enable forwarding to your ISP DNS servers
2. Your internal nic needs to point to itself for DNS Servers, nothing else.
3. Your external nic needs to be on the subnet of your cable modem's internal connection, you shouldn't need any DNS entries, but here it would not hurt to have them. Gateway should be your Cable Modem's internal IP.

Do some tests... Ping your server's external ip, then ping the modem, then your DNS.. .if you can ping by IP, try DNS and check to see if it's working. If so, check your client's internet options for the 'automatically detect settings' enabled only, no proxy entries.

By the way, if you are using Active Directory, don't be surprised if you run into problems with ICS... use NAT instead.

Good luck
