Here is the situation....

I have one windows 2003 server machine which is in WORKGROUP mode. I have a Windows NT 4.0 domain and what i want is that to create folders on the 2003 server, share the folder and i want the NT 4.0 Domain users to be able to map the drive from the 2003 via NT login script and access the files and folders within.

Do i have to invoke some trust relationship and if so, please tell me in simple steps as to how...

Simple solution: Join the 2003 server to the domain as you would join a client computer. The 2003 server acts as a member server (it's not a domain controller). This allows the resources on your 2003 server to be accessed by domain users. The trust is established. You may then adjust the permissions on your files and shares to include domain members who can then easily map drives to those shares.

Note: when editing NTFS and share permissions on the member server for files and folders, it may default to looking for local users and groups but all you need to do is change where it looks (location) and you will easily find your domain users and groups to add to the permissions.

What are your migration plans, are you keeping the old NT4 domain, do you plan on migrating the existing domain or creating a new one and replacing the old servers or upgradign them to 2003..? etc.

thank for the valuable reply. But i may have forgot to mention an important thing in my question. As per our company policy, I cannot join the 2003 in the NT domain. Now what can be done in this scenerio?

use a log on .bat with the line

net use G: \\server2003\shared

The most overlooked advantage to owning a computer is that if they foul up there's no law against wacking them around a little.
