Setup Server 2008 R2 as DNS server

I have setup a Server 2008 R2 DC, and it setup DNS when setting up the DC. The XP clients can join the domain, but the Windows 7 clients cannot. From what I read, the XP clients can join since they can fallback to NetBIOS, but 7 cannot. I do not know how to manually get the setting right (yet) for this to work. I have tried removing the DNS role and setting it back up, but it still wont work.

Where should I start here to get it working?

You need to enable netbios on the windows 7 machines. Go into network and sharing center, then manage your network connections. Click the properties of TCP/IPv4. Click on the advanced tab. Click the wins tab. Enable netbios over tcp/ip. Click ok and onward and upward. Now you can let the rest join with no problem in theory. Good luck.

Enable netbios over tcp/ip is automatic when you utilize DHCP.

Are you using DHCP? Have you configured the DHCP option to include DNS Servers?

I have enabled netbios manually on the server and the clients, but it still will not work.

I get the error attached.

I'll ask a stupid question, what version of Windows7 are your clients running? If it's one of the Windows Home editions you wouldn't be able to join a domain.

Here is nslookup results when I run it on the server:

C:\Users\Administrator.SERVER10>nslookup
Default Server: localhost
Address: 127.0.0.1

I can't get to a client right now, but I don't think nslookup will resolve when I run it on a client.

Does my forward/reverse lookup zones have anything to do with this?

Does it matter that I am using the router as the DHCP server?

Oh, and I just when to check on my DNS forwarders, and I had it set to 192.168.0.1 (the router). It was verified, but unable to resolve. I added another IP address (the DNS server that the router uses (assigned by ISP) and that was able to verify. Will that help anything?

Your DNS forwarders should only point to your ISP DNS servers. Your router does no name resolution.
