Hello Everyone,

We recently upgraded our IP Office R3 to an IP Office R6 system and are trying to setup soft phones for use remotely.

We have the licenses and have enabled the dns entries to forward to the unit.

If i login using the hostname we created we cannot connect.
If i login using the IP address it will connect.

The hostname resolves to the ip but it will not connect internally or externally.

If i type the ip into a browser i get: "HTTP Server Allows Avaya Clients Only"

If i type the hostname into a browser i get "Parsing Error"

This tells me the hostname is not being accepted by the unit.

I don't know where to start with this except to say it's just all wrong, which softphone version? Phone Manager or video softphone? Both are software based and don't employ the use of a browser. For connecting remotely/externally you need to set up forwarding of SIP ports etc (for video softphone) or use a VPN (for Phone Manager softphone). Have you done this? And if using DNS the hostname doesn't even get passed to the IP Office to be rejected the Incoming connection is on it's IP address as usual :)

I've just bought a brand new car and on the way out of the dealership the engine seized, they want £2000 paid in advance to look at it which they will keep if they can find a way to blame me for it......Remind you of anything :)

I was testing to see if the IPO was accepting traffic from the DNS hostname vs the IP .. thats why the browser test came about.

I know the browser is not used for the softphone.

Ok i tested the VPN for the softphones and it works as expected. But it only connects if i enter the ipaddress in the server field .. not the hostname that we have registered.

So i basically have two issues ..

a DNS entry that resolves but i cannot login using it.

and i need the ports that have to be forwarded to the IPO from my firewall.

Neither programme does a DNS lookup for logging in (similiar to Manager) so you need to use the IP address of the IP Office, that's just how they work. And the ports you need to forward depends on which softphone you are using :)

We are using Softphone version 3.0 56516

Ok so are you saying there is no way to route this across the internet without VPN?

Because that is what i would like to accomplish.

no offence but why would you want to route voice traffic without a vpn? you can't guarantee the connection and will have nothing but grief. i would quit whilst you are ahead and setup a vpn.

Get well soon Aaron.

Well it seems my questions have been answered .. my expectations were a little different than what its capable .. but i can work with this .. thanks guys .. stars for everyone!

Thanks, but FYI if you were to use a free SIP client such as 3CX you can register that no problem across an open internet connection just using port forwarding and it works very well, this would require a 3rd party endpoint licence in the system but as I say the client is free, I will attempt tomorrow to connect video softphone externally without VPN and let you know if it's possible/how well it works :)

there are also security implications with not routing your voice over a secure VPN as well. Bear in mind, if the company you are dealing with is security conconsious, then squirting UTP RTP packets unaided across a public network wouldnt be an option.

Doesn't work with video softphone anyway, I have just tested it. The problem is you can't assign a STUN server and so the packets can't transition NAT correctly to allow registration or voice traffic. It does however work using 3CX as previuosly mentioned, though as HSM says it isn't 100% secure but having said that the random nature of routing across the Internet means it would be rather difficult to extract any kind of meaningful voice from the traffic unless they were literally tapped directly into your Incoming connection from the Web :)

Indeed, but as I said they awould have to be on your link to the exchange or on the link to the exchange as after that each packet can take any number of routes that increases exponentially each step :)
