Can Someone plese guide me the right way to setup outlook 2000/2003 through VPN access. We have an exchange 2000 in one city and users needs to be setup to access outlook 2000 through different city via VPN. Internally it works fine. VPN is working fine no problems, except exchange access through VPN come up with error "unable to fine mail server"
Thanks

What VPN solution are you using?

Sorry Its not a VPN issue. The problem is that we have an exchange 2000 server in one place & we are trying to setup a outlook 2000 client in a different city to send & recieve email from exchange server, but we can only recieve email and unable to send out spiting error about smtp server error. So the question is what address should we put on the outgoing mail server smtp: I can send and recieve email within the domain but if I send outside the domain I get the error. At first I thought its a VPN issue because we have a VPN setup as well. Any idea How to solve this issue. Thanks

If the remote office is connected to the local office where the Exchange server is located, then you shouldn't use Internet Email service but instead connect directly using the MS Exchange service.

How? It doesnt work unable to find the exchange server or users when we put the user name and click check name it doesnt find the name and comes up with the error. Do we have to run the VPN client on both side before or what exactly needs to be done pleasee let me know. Thanks

check relaying restrictions on your virtual smtp server. might be set to relay only for normal internal ip addresses. might have to include/add ip address range that is used during vpn connection.

Relay doesn't come into play here because the problem isn't sending the email it's attaching to the Exchange server.

I'd suspect it to be a DNS issue. From the remote site ping the exchange server name and ip...do you get a response to both? Instead of putting in the name of the server, enter the IP when setting up Outlook to see if you get a response.

I will checkup on the DNS issue. Does it make a difference whether A initiates a connection with B or B intiates a connection with A in our case it A always initiates connection with B and B is trying to connect to exchange email. Thanks

I'm afraid I don't understand. Are you saying the VPN tunnel isn't always up?

If it doesnt work at all then what is the other alternative to solve this problem I am thinking about leasing an SMTP service what thats costly.

What I am saying is side A has a VPN client and they always initiates a connection. Does side B also needs a VPN client to connect to Exchange email. I am not sure about this process.

The client side needs to have access to the network that the Exchange server resides on, either directly or through a VPN, etc.

If it's not DNS problem, check your routing table on your exchange server.

Only one side initiates the tunnel, doesn't matter which one but usually the remote site.

I have a similar setup for a user in our organization who works remotely. She connects to out network by vpn. Only thing I have done is I had added exchange ip in her host fine in her pc. Additionally I had addedd exchange service as well as Internet mail service in her outlook. Also I made to deliver her incoming mail to her personal folder but sending is by exchange service. She doesn't face any problem and things are working fine. Try doing the setup steps I had inmentioned in this post, I am sure it will help u.

regards

Shakeel
