I have a client that uses shared web hosting (web-mail included but only SquirrelMail) and they have just upgraded their on-site network to Windows Server 2003 Active Directory. Is it possible to set up an Exchange Server on the DMZ for just mail? Can I just have the hosting company modify the MX record to point to a static IP where the Exchange box is?

Thanks!

I wouldn't suggest putting Exchange in the DMZ. You'd have to open a pile of ports so that it can communicate with AD in the internal network. Put Exchange in the internal network.

The amount of ports you need to open from the DMZ to the LAN means that anyone compromising the DMZ compromises the LAN. As Pat says, put it on the LAN.
