We are trying to upgrade a law firm that is running Novell 3.12, using an Ethernet network, and was running 486 workstations using Windows 95. We upgraded the workstations to 1GHz, 128MB of RAM, running Windows 98SE. The problem is that we can't get the new machines to log into the server. We are trying to use the Novell client that comes with Windows as the old machines used. It is like they aren't seeing the server. We are not at all familiar with Novell 3.12, we run 4.11 at work, and really don't know much about the Ethernet with the BNC connectors. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since you're on a Novell server you don't need the novell client32 software you could use the client for netware network windows provides and login as a bindary server.

it's in control panel under network. add the client under Microsoft "Client for netware network" and it should add the nessary protocols. under IPX/SPX in the advance section select the frame type or leave it as auto.

get familiar with "syscon", "Pconsole" and "filer" commands.

We tried using the client provided with Windows to set up these workstations but we are not getting a logon screen when we reboot. We checked the frame type and it is set to auto just like the old workstations were.

it sounds like an environment problem.
have you checked your connection? make sure that terminators are at each end of the connectors.

check the wires make sure that there isn't a break in the connection because if one is loose, it brings the whole network down.

try to ping each workstation to see if they see each other.

check the protocols your using. goto the server and type "config" to see the configurations of the network card on the server and to make sure the server is detecting it.
if necessary add an additional card to the server.

change the frame type to that of the network in the IPX/SPX option instead of setting it to auto.

check the nic's on the workstation. with a bnc connection they all should be operating at the same speed (IPX/SPX section).

Here is another idea, software based problem and solution; worth a try anyway. Hit start and logoff. When prompted to log back on, the proper netware login window just might pop up. Enter login name and password and server. Good luck
