I thought I had everything right, but after I build my project to the exe file and then setup the distribution files. I copy the files to a CD. I get an error after clicking on Install to computer. The window that pops up says:

Setup Error 279

Object 9

Your setup files may be damaged. Try restarting
the setup program.

I must be doing something wrong or copying the the wrong files. I copy the files in the Distribution\Netsetup folder. Anyone seen this before?

Thanks,
Ramon

Ramon;

If you selected Windows 95 as a platform for your exe in the Setup Wizard and the name of your exe is not in the 8.3 naming format you will get this error.

Hi Ed,

I am using FoxPro 5.0 and don't remember it asking for the windows platform. I am putting it on a CD to take it to another computer and install it. I have tried running the setup from one computer to another using the network and it installs fine. Am I supposed to have the files from Netsetup folder and the files from the Compressed folder? My choices when creating the Disk Image is only the following three:

1.44 MB 3.5-inch
1.2 MB 5.25-inch
Netsetup

Thanks,
Ramon

Ramon,

Try installing the updated setup wizard. It specificaly addresses your problem.

Otherwise you may have an issue installing from a CD because it is read only. (?)

Ed,

I downloaded it, but it seems to be a few months older than my files. So, I didn't use them. I did try to use the setup file over the network and the same error came up. I am getting discouraged.

Thanks,
Ramon

Ramon,

What OS are you trying to install on. And what is the name of the exe.

Ed,

I am trying to install it on a Windows XP and I have tried to install it on Windows 2000 and Windows 95. There is nothing wrong with the EXE file, it is in the distribution setup.exe file. I am thinking maybe I would be better off trying to get a newer version of FoxPro.

Ramon,

I am thinking maybe I would be better off trying to get a newer version of FoxPro.

That's an excellent idea, but you don't need to do that to solve your specific problem. Just get a newer install program. There are several low-cost and shareware installers available -- they don't have to be specific to VFP.

For one example, do a web search for Inno Setup.

THanks Mike,

I did a quick search and found Inno Setup 5.0.7 on download.com and it is free. Do I use this instead of the setup.exe that the distribution creates?

Ramon

You use Inno Setup to create the setup.exe just as you previously used the Setup Wizard.

Tamar,

But how do I get the distribution files in it and how do I uncompress them? I have been looking at the Inno Setup and I am completely lost. I am not sure I can do this.

Thanks,
Ramon

Ramon,

Do I use this instead of the setup.exe that the distribution creates?

No, you use it instead of the Setup Wizard. The end product is a set of files, which you send to the user. These files include a program called Setup.Exe. Just tell the user to run Setup.Exe and follow the prompts. You don't have to worry about uncompressing the files.

Thanks Mike,

What about the distribution files to allow the program to run outside of FoxPro? I am sorry if I sound stupid, but I would rather ask than to not know what to do.

Also, I had a smaller program that I did that I used the setup wizard and it works fine. Most of the file names are different. Is there something still there from it that I need to get rid of?
