I've recently installed 6.22 on a Dell Latitude CPXH laptop and would like some help with setting up a samsung (scr-2438) cd-rom drive.

Download a 98SE bootdisk from Use the drivers from it on the 6.22. You basically parallel the SE bootdisk config.sys and autoexec.bat on the 6.22 and it works.
Haven't done it on the Latitude so there are no guarantees. the SE bootdisk covers about 99% of the CDROM equipment that is put in machines so I need to leave some wiggle room.

If I parallel the config.sys and autoexec.bat from the Win98 boot floppy wouldn't c: "6.22" think that it's running from the "A:" floppy?

Not if the parallel is put on the hard drive. The config and autoexec on the floppy don't have any path information, everything is on root. Just a matter of copying the whole floppy root across, with the exception of command.com.

In your bootdisk's CONFIG.SYS file, you will need:
DEVICE=oakcdrom.sys /D:CDDRIVE1

In your bootdisks's AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you will need:
MSCDEX.EXE /D:CDDRIVE1 /L:X
SMARTDRV.EXE

This should load your CD-ROM as drive letter X. You can change the X to another letter, or leave the "/L:X" off completely and the system will assign a drive letter for you.

It is assumed the system files oakcdrom.sys, MSCDEX.EXE and SMARTDRV.EXE are in the root folder.

There may be a driver specific to your CD drive to use instead of oakcdrom.sys to give better performance than the generic oakcdrom.sys.
