I want to use my 2000 server as an smtp server for outgoing emails.

Outlook does not seem to connect to the SMTP Server that i am entering.

The server name is CORPSRV and thats what i am entering into the Outgoing mail server address.

I have configured the smtp virtual server to send the mail out through my ISPs mail server.

Does anyone know of any articles or how tos i can refer to

Thanks

Nick

what smtp service are you using on the server (exchange) or another application.

can you telnet to port 25 either your server of the ISP server.

Cheers

Dan

just a few thoughts but, if they dont host your email then you couldnt connect because you wouldnt be authenticated and that would be considered relaying which most mail servers dont allow. you could ask them to allow relaying from your domain. if they do host your email just double check your settings. hope this helps

Comment... Are you setting up a SMTP server using IIS? For SMTP, I believe Outlook will only connect to an Exchange server.
You can use Outlook Express to receive email from POP3 or IMAP and Send email SMTP via an IIS server. But, as bcardona points out, the mail system would have to allow your SMTP server to relay.

OK, your post had me thinking and so I went to the lab. This is what I was able to do...
I set up Outlook profile using POP3. For incomming mail, I chose my exchange org. For outgoing SMTP I put in the IP Address of my SMTP gateway (IIS 6 Running SMTP). Now, my gateway is directly connected to the internet, so I don't forward to an ISP. I was able to send mail via outlook through an IIS SMTP Server, for what it is worth... it can be done.
