I am setting up a Windows 2000 network. We will have 3 workstations and one win2k server. Do we need a separate server for Active Directory? Thanks.

No, you do not need a separate comp for active directory. However if you are running dhcp and wins and active dirictory on the same machine you are going to need plenty of horsepower. I suggest a 1.4 Ghz P4 or Athlon processor or better, no Celerons or Durons here. And better get at least 256 Megs of memory (512 would be better)

Hi,
I am new at this. I am trying to set up a school lab with 30 laptops on Win 2k Server.I
would like to know how to take away the ability of the kids to change their desktop settings.

Plus, exactly how do I install the network printer? I have a laser printer and a laserjet printer that will be used in the lab. I installed the drivers and clicked share them, but when I go to print it gives me an error. It says they are ready , but nothing happens. Its like there is no communication. I have them connected in a usb hub.

To stop them from changing there desktop settings you will need to create a policy that locks down the desktop settings amoung other things if you wish. You should be able to install the printer on the server and share it from there, Can u print anything from the server or cant print at all? does the print job stay in the print queue ? need some more information there sorry.

hth

You could also use mandatory profiles for the desktop settings problem. It will allow them to make changes, but they will be reset to default when the user logs back on.
