Hi all,
I am faced with setting up a 2000 Advanced server and supporting it remotely using modem access. I have a couple of years NT4 Server support and have run up a 2000Server testbed to the point at which I had it doing the basics of Terminal Server sessions through a LAN.
My ideas so far are use the terminal server (TS) capability to provide a desktop, RAS to provide dial-in access & possibly get VPN up & running to my remote 98 machine to give some degree of session security. I don't require DHCP or active directory as the client machines/users are pretty small in number.
Could anyone who has had to jump through these hoops before please point me in the right direction. More specifically I need to know about potential problems getting the remote desktop through the phone line (big bulky things down narrow wires). Eg if the phone line goes down what state is the TS session left in ? Can I start a process running, leave the TS session and it will be there when I log back in ? How can I optimize a TS session to run through the phone line ?
I am reading up on these type of questions but books are one thing and experience is entirely another. I'd appreciate any insights.
Thanks Ian
