I am setting up performance counters in System Monitor to try to figure out why one of our servers keeps crashing. I have never done this before. I have pretty good documentation on how to do it but some things are left out that I need to know. I have several questions so I guess I will number them for clarity.
1. I need to add the counters Logical Disk and Physical Disk. I do not see these in here. What is up with that?
2. How long should you run a counter? I am monitoring the typical things, disks, memory, processor.
3. How many counters can you run at a time? I have got about ten counters. For example I am monitoring the Processor counter (and nine other major counters like Memory. But there are many sub-counters under these main counters, for example under Processor it has %processor time, %user time. Is running 10 major counters and all of the counters beneath them too much to run at one time? I don't want to hurt the server performance too much.
4. When it has the choice of "All instances" vs. selected instances what are they talking about? I see where that is in the interface but I don't understand what "instances" actually means.
5. It says if you are monitoring disk performance you should save the log files to another machine. I see a place the put the location of the log but when I browse through My Network Places to my PC it will not let that setting show up in the box.
Wow, that is a lot of questions. Our network admin is gone for two weeks so I have no one to ask. Thank you very much for any help you can give me.
