I have a Network everywheres linksys router...and i have a rca cable modem through charter communications......i cant seem to get the high speed internet to work on the computer when connected through teh router....do i have to change the new ip address when connected through the router to the default gateway or what...i dont get it...

btw im runnin a dell tower....2.8ghz...120 gig hd....2.0mb high speed through charter....rca modem through charter...high speed works when modem is connected to just the computer...

Do not use the one/off switch of your modem. Unplug the device. Remove any network cables. After three minutes, plug the modem in, let it stabilize. Now plug in the power cord to the linksys router. Let it stabilize. Now connect the modem to the linksys. Now connect your computers.

Leave the modem and router on 24/7, protect them with a suitable device for power surges, but leave them on.

Last, most cable systems require MAC authentication. Use the linksys router Advanced option to clone your principal PC desktop MAC address:

Use the ipconfig /all or wntipcfg /all command to read the "Physical address" of your ethernet adapter. Write it down.

Now either or all: clone that number (entered without spaces) into the Linksys router; and/or call the cable ISP and tell them you want to change your MAC authentication, and either use the native Linksys router MAC, or having cloned it, the results of your ipconfig or other test.
