This is my first experience with "distinctive ringing" service from the Telco. Client has one line on a CICS and the Telco is providing a second number (distinctive ring) for the fax. When I call the fax #, L1 also rings on the CICS...?

It is my understanding that only the fax should ring. I have the fax crossed directly to L1, straight from the Telco and before the CICS.

???

Thanks in advance,

You need a ring detector to distribute the line between the fax and the cics.

Distinctive ringing is simply two ringing patterns over the same line. The CICS just recognizes the ringing voltage and not the ringing pattern and therefore line 1 will ring if you dial either of the numbers because it doesn't know the difference. Telemarv hit it right on! You have to put something in front of the CICS and Fax that will determine the ringing pattern and in turn ring the correct device. CMP (Call Management Products) makes a device called the RingRite Plus and Viking makes one as well. CMP: or 800-245-9933.

The CMP unit has 4 RJ11 jacks on the front of the box labelled Line IN, RING 1, RING 2 and RING 3. You take the line directly from the LEC to Line IN. Then RING 1 to the CICS and RING 2 to the Fax. (Ring 3 would be for a 3rd distinctive ringing telephone number). If the main number is dialed, the ringing is diverted to RING 1 Port and would ring the CICS and the same for the fax and if the 2nd number is dialed. I hope this helps you out!

Only problem you will have with a ring detector is you won't receive caller ID information.

You may want to check your fax machine documentation as some fax machines have distinctive ring detection built in. In which case you would route the line the fax machine and there would be an output port from the fax that you would connect to the phone system Line port.
