I have 2 Windows 2000 clients and 1 Windows 2000 Server. Our internet access is a satelite service from Directv. The satelite modem connects to the server via a USB connection so I am unable to hook it up throgh a router. I am currently sharing the connection throug the server using ICS, but want to be able to share this internet connection without using this service. What do I need to do?

Set up Routing and Remote Access (RRAS) Server on your 2k Server box. Also NAT router. It wont care what the interface to the modem is.

Have you try using USB to Ethernet adapter? or you can buy a router that accepting USB connection in it's WAN site.

I have tried a USB to ethernet adapter, but had no luck. I was also unsuccessful in finding a router with a USB uplink.

Plasma,
I was in the same boat as you recently. Switching to NAT using ROuting and Remote Access works excellently. I set it up and also forwarded certain ports to computers on my internal LAN. It was kinda intimidating at first, but I figgered it out eventually. If ya got any questions, jus holla

I'm about to embark on this RRAS/NAT journey myself. I have Win2K adv. server setup as a Domain server, serving about 8 other machines. The server has a dedicated NIC for the internet port.

If you could give a quick outline of what you did and any snags you may have seen it would be much appreciated.

In NAT one public interface , one private interface
Then off to a static route for the 2 interfaces
What is your DNS server
What is your DCHP server
If this server is both , then configure dns
With a foward lookup to your domain name.
Then set up Dhcp scope for distribution for the clients ,
in Dhcp you will need to configure these server optons
003 Router
005 Name servers
015 Dns Domain Name

Thanks for your help.

What addresses do I use you in the static routes for the two interfaces? Just the IP addresses of each interface?

I just entered 0.0.0.0 into the static route for both interfaces and that seemed to work!
