Setting up DSL on Win98 1

Hi,
I have a migrane over this and I know it's simple. I've been working on my sis-in-law's PC for 3 days. She has Windows 98 Second Edition.

She has a Network Everywhere Network Adaptor and I got the driver off of the internet to install it after I took Win2k off and run her recovery disk to put 98 back on.

I've done everything I know to do and can't get it connected to the internet.

The network card is working fine under device manager. I have it set-up to obtain an IP automatically, but I'm doing something wrong. I know there's a lot you probably need to know.

She has DSL and when I plug it into my laptop with XP it connects automatically.

I went to Network in the Controll panel and she has Client for Networks, TCP-IP and her Network card is showing. That's about all I know to tell you.

Is there anything else I need to be checking? I thought that when you went to my network neighborhood that it should be showing an icon or something saying it was working like it does in XP, but it's not.

If you have any advice, I will quickly answer any questions about the setup that you may need.

Double click on TCP/IP, make sure 'Disable....' is checked for 'DNS Configuration' and 'WINS Configuration', and 'Client For MS Networks' is checked under Bindings.

If those are ok, then go to Start/Run, type winipcfg in the box, click OK, click 'Release All', click 'Renew All', and click OK.

If no luck, then reseat the network card.
If no luck, then insert it in a different slot.

If no luck, then try a different NC driver.

Hi,
When I enable Internet Conn. Sharing it throws up the wizard. It asks if I connect to the internet with high speed and then lists the adaptors. Only the dial-up adaptor is listed and when I check it it says that this is not a high speed adaptor.

Do I even need to enable the ICS. NOthing else seems to work.

When I get this connection working correctly, will I be able to see it under the network neighborhood? All I want to do is connect with DSL.

Forget ICS and the wizard, and try the suggestions that ski mentioned. The winipcfg step is important, and we need to know if you're getting any kind of IP address. Also, check "Device Manager" by right-clicking My Computer and going to Properties.

Regarding your other question about Network Neighborhood, the answer is no. It doesn't work that way in Windows 98. The only thing that ever shows up in there would be other computers/printers on the LAN that are sharing resources. You WILL NOT see anything in here regarding the internet connection.

ICS shouldn't be involved until AFTER you get the ethernet connection working.

This may or may not have anything to do with your problem, but I will post it anyway because it solved a previous problem. My main PC was on WIN XP with Sprint Fast Connect DSL ...... I contacted Sprint, they suggested an inexpensive router, I setup the el-cheapo router and now the Win 98 Computer is connected to the Internet DSL, through the router and works fine. I hope this helps, if not, I at least tried, hehe

A router will help only if 2 or more computers using the same ISP. I'm not sure if livelots is dealing with a network.

Thanks for all of your(yalls, help. I uninstalled the card and reinstalled it just for good luck. I then went to the winipcfg and did what ski told me to and it worked perfectly.

I told my in-law to do that step over the phone to start with and she said it didn't work so I forgot about it. But I tried it again myself and it worked.
