I am new to this and have been reading Mark Minasi's book. Here is what i have...

I have a static IP using a Linksys router as a firewall. I want to host my own website and email server. Do i need to setup my server for DNS? I plan to host only my website. (FYI i can access my FTP server ok.)

I really appreciate any help you can offer...in the meantime i will read on to chapter 7.

You do not need to setup DNS unless you're going to DNS host your own domain. If your domain is hosted by some ISP, you just need to have them add your FTP records to point to your static ip address. Then just assign your Linksys the static ip and then use port forwarding to forward all port 21 and port 80 traffic to the appropriate servers in your network.

Are you running a full T-1? If not, you're going to see a big performance drop on your connection once people start using your website/ftpsite. You may want to think about having the website hosted elsewhere. I know a guy here locally that runs a small web/dns hosting business. He's got a T-1 to his house. You may want to get with him. His website is . Just a suggestion.

Casbot,
Thanks...I am on Cable. I contacted my ISP and will have to pay $10 for their DNS service.

The purpose for my website is not for public use...only for my clients to access project data so the traffic is not alot. I am the only one that uses the ftp. I have been hosting my website this way using tzo but the cable company gave me a deal (imagine that!). Additionally I have over 60gig of data stored...way too much to host plus i have better control.

thanks!
