I have Win2k Adv Server and am trying to set up my domain. I try entering the Domain under My Computer Properties and get the message DNS lookup problem. This is a Standalone server. I try using the DNS of the server and the DNS from Register.com but, to no avail. I am using a D-Link 804 Router and Cable Modem.

have you run dcpromo?? this is the first step in setting up a domain controller.

Dcpromo has been run. I get the specified DNS server cannot be contacted. I have the Server IP as the preferred DNS and the IP of my Domain as the Secondary DNS. However, one of the two IP's I have for my Domain times out when I ping it, I use the other one that works as the Secondary.

Did dcpromo complete successfully? You should be setting your controller up as the first controller in a new forrest if its a standalone machine and therefore you shouldn't get the response you are getting. Try disconnecting your cable modem from the router and then run dcpromo.

Ok.

Did u run dcpromo % let it install the DNS server for u?
Check if u did by going into the DNS mmc. if u have, then proceed to setup a DHCP scope and exclude a certain section for your servesrs. this is the one serving as Dc. then of course, u need a hub, hook the client and try adding it to network, it should work.

I removed what I thought was the Server Name, but wasa the Domain name, from the DNS list. Under the computer name Forward and Reverse look fine. If I understand it correctly the Forward Lookup should read "computername.domain.com".
