Setting password in Excel 97

Hello everybody
I have written some VBA for Excel 2002 that sets the password of a workbook using NewWorkbook.Password = PasswordVariable.
This works fine in 2002 but someone here is using Excel 97 and it fails with "Object doesn't support this property or method"
I have googled and searched these forums but cannot find out how to set the password in Excel 97.
Does anyone know how to do this, please?
Any help most appreciated.

... can you be more specific please? Do you want to set the workbook protection password, or the workbook open password?
