I’m presently administering a network of 60 users half running win 95 the rest running win98 I’m trying to setup system policies on all these users but its going nowhere.
No matter what changes are made on these policies from the server it doesn’t seem to take any effect on the clients.
What’s going wrong and what has to be done to rectify this?

Is your .pol in your netlogon share for you DC? Your clients should automatically pick it up from there. That being said, I personally have never seen it work well. The most reliable way I know of is to create .reg file that modifies the remote update key in the registry to point to a specific location and run it in your login script. I can get you the appropriate reg key if you want to pursue that route.

i will reverify your advice, but hypothetically speaking since there only about 4 users running 95 do you suggest upgrading them to 98 so that there will be a concintincy first among all users, and would this maby in any way somewhat simplify administration.

In my opinion, 98 was only a service pack for 95 that microsoft decided to charge us for, but yes it is wise to maintain as much consistency as possible.

thankx for all your help, its been a pleasure having you help me.
Thank you.

hi mcconmw can i have the reg key please because the problem i have it that the clients dont alway pull the .pol fine off the dc!!
Tanxs m8

The key is System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update. The easiest way to do it in my opinion is to load poledit on a machine that represents the ones you are changing, open the local registry, make the changes to remote update (set to manual and add the path), and then use regedit to go to the key above and export it. Once that is done, you can add the .reg file to your scripts and run it until you are comfortable all machines have it or add some logic to check if the machine has it before copying it. FYI...I located the key by opening the .adm file for poledit and going to the remote update section.

In order for changes to be effective on Win9X machines the policies will need to be changed on a Win9X machine. In other words, you must run the policy editor from a 95 or 98 machine for it to work on 95 or 98. Also, make sure that the common.adm and the windows.adm templates are loaded.

Good Luck.

I have never known that to be true. I have edited 95 policies from my nt machine numerous times. You just have to make sure you are using the correct templates.

You will need to install the group policy files on both 95 and 98, other wise they will not recognise the groupings on NT. The file is on the 95 or 98 disk and is in the same directory as poledit. You will need to got to install new software on control panel, then to windows setup and then click have disk. Browse to the directory that poledit is in on the windows CD and then click ok. Check the box that says group policies and then restart the machine. I have just been through this and this was the problem I had.

Good Luck
