Afternoon all,

being new to sharepoint I was hoping that someone could give me an answer to the above subject? When clicking on the name of a document that is held within a document library it automatically opens a read only version that you have to save with a different name. To open a version you can write to, you have to remember to click the arrow to the right of the name and choose 'edit in ms office word'. So, can you set sharepoint to open a writable version rather than just a readable one, when clicking the name of the doc?

thanks for reading, Paul.

Hello,

That is by design/default in SharePoint. If you are displaying a webpart in a page you can change the view so that you get the dropdown arrow by default in the webpart and then just chose to edit it in MS Word. But as far as I know there is no way of directly geting a writable copy opened when clicking the name of the document.

Also if users are going to work with the documents, using the check in/ check Out function is recommended.

Best Regards,
Thomas

Hello Thomas

thanks for the reply. With users being users I was thinking if it could be done then when they forget to check out a doc, it wouldn't be that much of a problem. O well, they will have to learn the hard way!

Thanks again, Paul
