I could hardly be happier with the performance of our 831. And it would not be running without the help of this group. Thanks to all that have helped!

The one thing I'd like (nice to have, not required) is for the router to get current date and time from an NTP server. Is there a command that I could use to get time from an NTP server?

I looked around but couldn't find anything to set up the use of a time server. (I did find and am using the "#clock set" command for manually setting the time.)

Is this even available on the 831 router?

Thanks in advance.

You should be able to use the command "ntp server" in global configuration mode. I can't find it in the command reference at the moment, but it should look like this:

Router(config)# ntp server 172.16.22.44

If you're doing ntp authentication you'll probably also need the "ntp authentication-key" command.

Don't fear the question mark, too. :) You can always issue one for more info.

Router(config)# ntp ?

some of the older 800 series only support sntp instead of regular ntp. so watch out for that..

Would that be a software/firmware issue or a general issue with the early 800-series?

Using the documentation noted above, I tried to define an ntp server. It doesn't look like our 831 supports ntp. Would not recognize (config)# ntp server [ip-address] command.

Maybe I did something wrong, but can't figure out what.

Try this...
router>en
router#conf t
router(config)#?
See if any ntp commands are an option. If you don't see ntp (or even if you do), you can still try
router(config)#ntp ?
See what comes up. Post a sh ver, and I can tell you what your router will and will not do.

No reference to ntp for the # ? (but an education in what else is available!)

Here's the link...

Select "search by image", and enter the entire image name, including the .bin...your's is
c831-k9o3y6-mz.123-7.T12.bin

It doesn't look like your image supports network time protocol. It would say...for example, here's an image I have for my home adsl router (2620XM)...

c2600-adventerprisek9-mz.124-9.t2.bin
I know...overkill...
If you do the search by image on that, it says network time protocol is supported.
In the feature navigator, after you enter your image, you can click on any of the features that it lists, because they are links, and they direct you to a page that explains exactly what the feature you click on is.

I haven't studied sntp. It might be an option, but time management on the router is a nice-to-have not really a requirement. I'll look at it and check to see if its supported.

Thanks.

sntp stands for simple network time protocol..
so

sntp server x.x.x.x

basically the difference is that with NTP your router could also be a NTP server... with SNTP it can only be a client.
