My cable modem is permanently connected, and I sometimes return to the computer to find that my "HOME-page" address has been changed by an external agency over the 'net, and it is always the same address change. How can I prevent outside forces from changing my "HOME" page URL?

...by making sure you don't have spyware and other malware already running on your computer.

May i suggest installing ad-aware and SPYBOT(search and destroy) , updating them, and then getting rid of all the stuff it's gonna find ?

Spybot S&D is absolutely the best spayware detection/clean up program out there, and you can't beatthe price (free).

Also, use a firewall! Zonealarm is free, and an excellent product. I use a LinkSys router with built in firewall for my cable modem. If you are going to have an always-on connection to the net, you NEED protection.

I spent 3 hours last night trying to figure out what was wrong with a buddy's computer. I finally figured out that his son was at a porn site and downloaded i-lookup, which turns out installs a backdoor and then uses the machine as a proxy to broadcast spam. 100% of his system resources were being used for the relay.

The trojan is so good that when I tried to download spybot s&d for him, it refused me access to the websites to download it. It also refused me access to mozilla.org to download an alternate browser (i-lookup totally hijacked IE, thank you Microsloth for making internet destroyer so open to thieves).

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

now now.... is the kid trying to be subtle and NOT get caught or he's doing it on purpose? I mean wow.... didn't he do the association between pr0n and computer going kaput?

I am seriously disapointed in that kid's ninja-surfing abilities. ;)

The kid is clueless ... he made no attempt to cover his tracks, you should have seen the history in IE... literally hundreds of sites.

Once i was at a ladyfriend's place and i was telling her that computers are litterally dirty snitches. She didn't believe me. So i got the laptop that everyone uses in that house and started looking for the cookies.txt file.

She understood perfectly when i was able to tell exactly what kind of pr0n her brother was surfing, which bulletin boards she frequented and what was the username she had on each one of them.

Although, i must admit it was frikking hilarious to see her reaction when over 70% of the cookies in there were made by her brother( who clamied he didn't surf the web much).

tsk tsk.
;)

if that isn't the problem i had once gotten a "virus" or "trojan" or "worm" not sure which do to i've never seen another "harmful program" get on my computer like it did. I don't remember the name of it but every time i rebooted it changed the homepage to a specific page (hated that page). For more information i will go for a search on google. Fortunecity.com once had a pop up that put this virus on your computer via tcpip i think.

Last night we had to completely wipe my friend's system and install everything fresh. Besides the trojans (syscpy.exe was easy to remove, just an edit in the registry and delete the files) and something called winndows.exe (2 N's, can't figure out what that was) and the spyware from Top Moxie & People on Page, and then i-Lookup hijacked the browser so totally that it was impossible to use it. I had to burn a copy of Netscape on disc from my computer in order to install it on his computer to even use a browser, because i-Lookup totally shut down Internet Destroyer when I blocked i_lookup from the net with ZoneAlarm.

I give him a week before his idiot stepson destroys the box again.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
