Set up Mitel 5224 IP Phone via VPN

We have recently set up a secure ipsec client to gateway connection from greenbow to a Linksys RV082 on a wireless network. We can ping and access the Mitel 3300 ICP system from the remote computers via the VPN connection. The problem is that we cannot configure the mitel 5224 ip phone correctly so that it boots up. The phone is plugged directly in to the laptop ethernet port.

We are running windows 7

any help would be much appreciated.

I forgot to mention. we have the wireless adapter and lan adapter bridged on the laptob the phone is connected to. As we have them bridged we are getting the local ip address displaying on the phone.

i am now getting the IP showing on the phone, but i am getting RTOS DHCP timeout??

Guessing it is not seeing the servers?

Since you are using a VPN you will not be using a teleworker which would take care of the issue. Are you trying to use DHCP for the phone? IF so it might be a better idea statically assignig the necessary IP addresses into the phone.

Anyway in order to have the phone boot it needs to have the IP address ( and subnet ) of the 3300 and the IP address of a TFTP server containing its boot code ( typically the 3300 ). In order to reach the devices it would also need to have the IP address of the gateway it needs to use to get to the 3300. If you use DHCP the phone also needs a particular text string to accept the IP address ( MITEL IP PHONE or something like that ). If you intend to use DHCP you need to deliver all of the above to the phone via options ( 3, 125 etc ). If you want to keep it simple then statically assign the first three to the phone.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.

With the above settings i am now getting TFTperr packet send fail

Your default gateway should be on the local subnet. The 192.168.1.0 network. I would assume 192.168.1.1. Run the "ipconfig /all" command from the PC and verify the gateway and subnet mask.

Yes you have the wrong default gateway. It needs to be the default gateway to get off the 192.168.1.x subnet. As BrianWarner points out it typically would be something like 192.168.1.1. The phone needs you to tell it how it can get to the 10.0.0.50 address.

I have entered the default gateway as 192.168.1.254 as shown below. and i am recieving L2&boot download error.

Phone just keeps rebooting. all the correct info in the static settings. i just keep getting packet send fail can you manually input the dhcp info??

Try resetting the phone back to defaults

Reboot it and hold down 7 , follow the teleworker setup and enter the MCD address of 10.0.0.50.

this should allow you to use local DHCP and not expect any MCD options to be provided( 125)

as long as TFTP is allowed across the VPN and the local network has a route to the MCD ( and vice versa),
the phone may now boot
