Over the last 2-3 months the time that it takes to merge all the sessions at the end of a backup job has been increasing. It’s now taking over 5 hours to complete the merge of 59 sessions (200GB).

No major changes have been made to the backup schedule or the backup server.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Running Windows 2000 SP4 with ARCserve 9 (Build 2020)

The database is getting larger and more fragmented. Well fragmented might not be the right word, but it expressed the idea. The larger it gets the slower it works. For example (these numbers are just out of my head and not realistic)
for a 1gb database it takes 1sec per 100 records
for a 5gb database it takes 10sec per 100 records

Also running the utilities ever month or less will help. The best thing to do now might be to reduce the size of the database by reducing the retention time for the pruning job.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately we cant lower the retention time for the pruning job.

You mentioned about running the Utilities every month. Which ones would these be?

dchain, keybuild, are may favorites, others like dbfix. ck out the faqs in this forum for details.

Would it be enough to have all the information in the database except the list of files and directories? If so modify the job to record summary information only in the database. Then if needed a particular session can always be merged in. This will greatly reduce the db size.
