Help!!

We have a new installation of Windows 2000 Server ( Small Business Edition ) at our clients site. Something is wrong with the services running on the server. If I try to Start or Stop any service, it times out with error 1053 and the service status is left Starting or Stopping. I have left it several hours and it never completes the start or stop. My Computer Management window also locks up if I try to open my services from there - I ended up having to load MMC and open the Services by itself. Very strange. None of this is logged in the event logs.

I have rebooted several times since this problem started. The server is running SP4 and I have Norton installed and it says I'm virus free. Any ideas for me? I about ready to head over there and reinstall the OS...

Thanks!

Which services are giving you problems? Have you tried starting the service as the administrator instead of system?

You may be dealing with conflicting services... Theres a nice explanation of individual services here.

We first found this problem with the Backup Exec Services (Added when you install Veritas Backup Exec). We had a problem in the software and tried stopping and restarting the services ( we have done that before to correct minor problems ) and found that those services got stuck while trying to stop. It doesn't seem to matter how its trying to log in ( either an Administrator user or local system account ), it will not allow me to start or stop it. So far, this has been every service that I have tried, but I quit trying when I ran out of non-important services :) The Netmeeting Remove Desktop Sharing service has been trying to Stop for about a day and a half now, for instance.
